How To Apply

Applying for a GLOBES fellowship is a two-part process. Applications, with a stated expression of interest in GLOBES, must be submitted to the PhD program of the department from which you wish to receive your doctoral degree (the “home” department). Participating Notre Dame departments include:

Upon the acceptance and recommendation by the home department, your application is considered for a GLOBES fellowship.

Candidates should follow these steps:

  1. Look over the GLOBES website to determine whether the interdisciplinary program and research focus in environmental and human health align with your educational and career goals. Please note that GLOBES adds a complementary training component to the pursuit of a traditional PhD degree. Trainees must fulfill the expectations of the GLOBES program and the PhD requirements of the home department, while balancing their independent thesis research and responsibilities to their major advisor.   2. Becky Miller with advisor Mike FerdigContact GLOBES faculty with similar research interests as your own and decide on a home department of study. The website also includes a GLOBES faculty listing. Many participating departments invite their top candidates to visit campus.

  3. Apply for graduate admission to the PhD program of the home department of study via the University of Notre Dame's Graduate School Website. Please note that application deadlines vary by department, with some departments requiring applications as early as January 2 for fall admission. In your electronic application, indicate in your general statement-of-interest essay that you would like to be considered for admission into the GLOBES program. In addition, identify and discuss any current real-world project(s) of interest to you and further explain how your background and research interests advance the themes of the GLOBES program.

  4. Upon the recommendation of the home department, your statement and application will be forwarded to the GLOBES Program Director for review by the GLOBES Admissions Committee. You may be contacted to set up a personal interview with the director if any previous campus visit has not included such meeting.

  5. The GLOBES Admissions Committee will review all department nominations to determine final fellowship awards. An official award letter will be sent out by the GLOBES Program Director to the nominees reiterating the commitments and benefits of becoming a GLOBES scholar. The award letter includes a deadline for acceptance and the GLOBES- IGERT Commitment Form to be signed and returned by the awardee.
