GLOBES announces undergraduate research opportunities for Summer 2008
The GLOBES program at the University of Notre Dame with funding from an NSF IGERT grant award is pleased to sponsor a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program during the summer of 2008. GLOBES undergraduate research fellowships provide an exciting opportunity for students to be involved in cutting-edge research with the intent of providing real world solutions to global environmental and human health issues. GLOBES program accepting applications for fellowships
Home departments involved in the GLOBES interdisciplinary studies PhD program in environmental and human health are accepting applications for Fall 2008 admission. These include Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Economics and Econometrics, History, History and Philosophy of Science, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, and Theology. Students interested in applying to the Department of Biological Sciences for a GLOBES PhD fellowship should submit applications materials by January 5, 2008. Catholic Digest names Shrader-Frechette U.S “Hero”
Kristin Shrader-Frechette, F.J. and H.M. O’Neill Professor of Philosophy and concurrent professor of biological sciences at the University of Notre Dame, has been selected by Catholic Digest magazine as one of 12 “heroes for America” — lay people living or working in the United States who are performing exemplary work in the spirit of the Catholic faith. Randy Olson's "Flock of Dodos" film to be shown at DeBartolo
Flock of Dodos: the evolution-intelligent design circus is the first feature documentary (85 mins.) to present both sides of the evolution vs. intelligent design controversy that recently appeared on the covers of Time and Newsweek. Two showings are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. in the Browning Cinema. GLOBES fellows and faculty meet with MV officials
A March 29 meeting with two Millennium Village (MV) officials, Dr. David Siriri (member of the World Agroforestry Association and current scientific director of an MV in Uganda at Rhuiira) and Dr. Johnson Nkuuhe (project director for UNDP and UN Country Coordinator for MV in Uganda), provides an opportunity for GLOBES faculty and students to receive first-hand information and discuss research ideas/projects that may be applicable to the needs of MV projects. One of the primary goals of the MV program is to develop science solutions to the issues faced by a developing community, specifically water quality, agriculture and public health. The meeting is planned as part of a week-long visit hosted by the Notre Dame Millennium Village Initiative.
