Program Areas & Curriculum: Modules
Cross-training modules are intensive study sessions designed to quickly immerse GLOBES students in the knowledge and practices of a specific field of study. The modules enhance students’ ability to cross disciplines and to understand multiple approaches to problem solving in settings not commonly found in their primary field of study. Offered during fall and spring breaks and/or summer sessions, the short courses familiarize students with laboratory and field applications of genetic, immunological, and economic-based techniques.
The Practicum in Environmental Ecology module in July 2008 was held at UNDERC (University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center) in northern Wisconsin. At the four-day module organized by Prof. Gary Lamberti, GLOBES fellows from all three cohorts gained hands-on experience and techniques in environmental field research. Shown here are students learning sampling and collection methods and the use of nontoxic dye tracer to measure water velocity.
During Spring Break 2008, GLOBES scholars also delved into the challenges of communicating their research to non-scientific audiences and the media at the Communications Training Workshop conducted by professional consultants from COMPASS (Communication Partnership for Science and the Sea). During Fall Break 2008, they learned strategies and techniques for sharing their scientific research and influencing policy-makers at regional, national and international levels. An environmental economics module organized by Professor Richard Jensen, chair of the Department of Economics and Econometrics, is scheduled for the summer of 2009.
GLOBES fellows are required to participate in at least three modules that introduce fields of study outside of their primary discipline. The modules are offered on a rotation schedule so that all cohorts have the opportunity to participate.
